How to get a local certificate of no impediment

  1. Book an appointment at a UK register office to give notice. Tell them you need a CNI to get married abroad when you book your appointment to give notice so they can issue you a CNI.
  2. Within 3 months of getting your UK CNI, apply online and pay £50 (non-refundable) to exchange your UK CNI for a local CNI.
  3. Book an appointment at a British embassy or a consulate in to exchange your UK CNI for one that’s accepted in . You’ll be sent instructions on how to book an appointment once you’ve completed your online application.

Select an appointment that’s at least 7 days after you apply for your local CNI so your documents can be checked. For example, if you apply on a Wednesday your appointment should be after the following Tuesday.

The date of issue on your local CNI will be the same as on your UK CNI. Once you have your local CNI, it will be accepted by local authorities for .
